Work Experience (WE) Horsemanship Program

The Work Experience (WE) Horsemanship Program by Melanie Mardon, Angel House Australia is specifically designed to help individuals who want to pursue a career in the equine industry. The program offers a unique six-week initiative aimed at providing participants with hands-on experience in horse care, training, and stable management. Its goal is to empower individuals with the essential basic skills and knowledge needed for a successful career in the equine industry, while also fostering professionalism and a deep respect for horse welfare. Participants in this program can opt to enrol in external equine-related study pathways, as listed below. Melanie Mardon works hand-in-hand with Tafe to provide valuable study support, practical guidance and skills and employment counselling where required and necessary.

Cert III Horse Behaviours - TAFE

This qualification is designed for individuals seeking to work in the Performance Horse industry. The job roles may include stable hand, stud hand, groom or strapper, farm hand, stock rider, or trail-ride assistant. The qualification covers the skills and knowledge required to work safely with horses, including handling, feeding, exercising, and caring for horses. It also includes stable duties, fitting gear, ridden and non-ridden horse exercise, work, competition, and transportation requirements.

Certificate in Equine Care & Behaviour - various short courses available

This course is entirely online and requires approximately 200 hours to complete as per the provided information. However, AHA assists students to acquire practical experience and skills related to horses, as this will ensure their safety and increase their knowledge. This is especially important since the course is presented entirely online.

 

Program Goals
The primary objectives of the Work Experience Horsemanship Program are as follows:


1. Skill Development: Equip participants with practical skills in on-ground and off-ground training, grooming, stable maintenance, and feeding practices. By participating in hands-on activities, individuals will gain the confidence and proficiency needed for various equine-related roles.
2. Understanding Horse Behavior: Foster an understanding of horse behaviour to cultivate strong, respectful partnerships between humans and horses. Participants will learn how to read equine body language, respond effectively to a horse's needs, and handle animals safely and compassionately.
3. Promoting Professionalism: Instill a strong work ethic and professionalism that will prepare participants for roles in the equine industry. This includes understanding responsibility, teamwork, and the importance of communication in a fast-paced work environment.
4. Career Readiness: Prepare participants for entry-level positions such as stable hands and strappers, including providing them with insights into career pathways in the equine sector. The program will include resume building, interview skills, and discussions on potential job opportunities.
5. Health and Safety Awareness: Emphasize health, safety, and basic veterinary care, ensuring participants can recognize signs of illness and maintain safe working practices within a stable environment.


Program Structure
The Work Experience (WE) Horsemanship Program is structured over six weeks to provide a comprehensive learning experience (it can be extended, based on prior arrangement and the participant's ability to learn) :


Weekly Themes: Each week will focus on specific aspects of horsemanship, including horse behaviour, grooming, feeding, stable management, basic veterinary care, and work ethics. This thematic approach facilitates in-depth knowledge and skill acquisition.
Hands-On Training: Participants will engage in a variety of practical activities with horses, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. They will be responsible for the daily care of assigned horses, reinforcing their learning and building confidence.
Guest Speakers and Experts: Throughout the program, participants will have the opportunity to learn from experienced equestrians, veterinarians, and industry professionals. These sessions will offer valuable insights into the equine industry and career opportunities.
Assessments and Certifications: At the end of the program, participants will undergo a practical assessment to demonstrate their acquired skills. Successful participants will receive a certificate of completion, recognizing their readiness for a career in the equine industry.

Please note the following important criteria:

  • Registration with the relevant college or training body is an external option and choice not directly linked to the Work Experience Horsemanship Program.

  • Participants must be 15 years, and 9 months minimum to qualify.

  • Enthusiasm, positivity and a love of horses is a must.

  • This is a work experience opportunity, with learning support, therefore no financial compensation is involved.

  • A certificate of completion will be issued on the successful completion of the practical component of this program. Areas that will be monitored are:

    • Reliability​

    • Work ethic

    • Time management

    • On- and off-ground practical horsemanship skills

    • Overall knowledge of horse behaviours and safety

    • General stablehand abilities
